Processing and Cognitive Enhancement (PACE)

High Rise Services Company offers innovative after-school programs for economically disadvantaged children in grades 1-9 to promote academic achievement, social and cultural enrichment, and cognitive development. Four days a week, certified teachers and school psychologists meet with students in a safe, supportive environment to provide homework assistance, tutoring, test preparation support, and help developing essential skills for school and life. Families of the students can also receive selected resources and service referrals through High Rise.

Because many students who perform poorly or seem unmotivated in school may actually lack vital cognitive skills, High Rise adapted the Processing and Cognitive Enhancement (PACE) Program. This intensive, one-on-one development program helps students acquire and sharpen a set of fundamental skills required for effective learning. Examples of these skills include the ability to quickly process new information, remember information while working, stay focused on a task, analyze unknown words, and apply logic and reasoning to a variety of situations.

A grant from the Mathile Family Foundation supports the PACE Program to help sustain this unique and vital outreach effort. As the High Rise website explains, "If a child's learning problem is just a lack of instruction, then some extra help or tutoring will improve academic performance. PACE teaches the underlying skills needed for learning to take place."
